1Password has rolled out a new feature designed to make finding passwords, logins, and access codes more intuitive using location-based access.

Users can now assign a specific physical location to saved items, which will appear in a new “Nearby” section on the app’s home tab when they are within range of that spot.

The update aims to reduce clutter in frequently used and favorited password sections by ensuring only relevant credentials appear when needed. This means travel documents could surface at the airport or a health card at a doctor’s office, eliminating the need for manual searches.

Locations can be added to both new and existing items either while physically at the place or by using a new map view that allows pin placement from anywhere. Users can also customize the range for Nearby items, setting it anywhere from 50 feet to 10 miles to maintain a focused and relevant list of credentials.

The new map view provides a visual representation of saved passwords based on location, making it easier to browse and manage stored credentials geographically. AgileBits, the company behind 1Password, emphasizes that user location data is never stored, tracked, or shared. All checks for nearby items are processed locally, ensuring privacy and security. Additionally, users have the option to disable the feature entirely at any time.

Initially introduced through 1Password Labs for testing and feedback, this feature has now been made widely available. By integrating location-based password management, 1Password continues to enhance its usability, offering a smarter and more intuitive way to access credentials when and where they are needed.
