Adobe has officially introduced its generative AI video tools, expanding the possibilities for creators using Premiere Pro and other platforms.
The highly anticipated Firefly Video Model, teased earlier this year, is now live and brings several new AI-powered features aimed at streamlining video production.
One of the key tools, Generative Extend, is launching in beta for Premiere Pro. This tool allows users to make small but valuable adjustments to video footage, such as extending the start or end of a clip by up to two seconds. This feature can fix minor issues like shifting eyelids or unexpected movements without requiring a full reshoot. It can also be applied to audio, allowing up to 10 seconds of ambient sound extension, though it doesn’t yet work with music or dialogue.
In addition to the Premiere Pro tool, Adobe is rolling out two more video generation features for web users: Text-to-Video and Image-to-Video. These tools, which are now available in limited public beta via the Firefly web app, let users create short video clips from text descriptions or still images. The generated clips can be fine-tuned with camera controls to simulate various angles, motion, and shooting distances, though they’re currently limited to five seconds in length at a maximum resolution of 720p.
While Adobe’s tools offer significant creative potential, there are still some limitations. Generative Extend, for example, only works for small adjustments, and both the Text-to-Video and Image-to-Video tools produce relatively short clips with occasional visual errors. Despite these restrictions, Adobe emphasizes that its AI video models are “commercially safe,” distinguishing them from other platforms under scrutiny for using unlicensed data.
Another benefit of Adobe’s approach is the inclusion of Content Credentials, which provide transparency regarding AI usage and ownership rights when videos are published. Although the tools are still in beta, their launch marks a significant step in the future of AI-assisted video production, making Adobe a key player in this emerging field.
