Apple has announced a temporary halt to AI-powered notification summaries for news and entertainment apps in response to criticism over generating inaccurate news alerts.
The decision follows an incident where Apple Intelligence misrepresented a BBC article, incorrectly reporting that Luigi Mangione, charged with murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself.
Changes in Notification Summaries
With the developer previews for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3, Apple has disabled notification summaries for news and entertainment apps, promising to refine and reintroduce the feature in future updates. The company is also rolling out additional changes:
- Transparency Improvements: All notification summaries will now appear in italics, helping users distinguish them from regular notifications.
- User Control: Users can disable notification summaries for specific apps directly from the Lock Screen.
- Beta Labeling: Apple will inform users that notification summaries are a beta feature, warning of potential inaccuracies.
Apple is expected to release a public beta of iOS 18.3 next week, but the official rollout date remains unclear. These changes aim to enhance trust in Apple’s AI-driven features and address concerns about misinformation in automated alerts.
