Apple announced plans to roll out a software update aimed at clarifying that its notification summaries are generated using artificial intelligence.
The update, set to arrive in the coming weeks, will include labels to indicate when text is AI-generated. “We encourage users to report a concern if they view an unexpected notification summary,” an Apple spokesperson stated.
While Apple’s notification summaries are often helpful, they’ve been criticized for occasional inaccuracies. Last month, the BBC raised concerns after a summary misrepresented a headline, incorrectly suggesting that Luigi Mangione, charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself. Apple’s SVP of software engineering, Craig Federighi, previously explained that sensitive notifications are excluded from summarization by Apple Intelligence.
This move comes as tech companies strive to improve transparency around AI-generated content. Meta faced similar scrutiny last year, revising labels for AI-edited images on its platforms following backlash from photographers. Google has also started adding disclaimers to images created with its AI tools.
By addressing these issues, Apple aims to build user trust and ensure its AI-powered features are both transparent and reliable.
