Bluesky, the decentralized platform emerging as a strong alternative to X, has introduced video sharing for its users.

As announced on Wednesday, Bluesky users can now upload videos of up to 60 seconds on both the desktop site and mobile app. This new feature marks a significant step forward for the platform, expanding its capabilities beyond text-based posts.

Once uploaded, videos will autoplay by default as users scroll through their feeds. However, for those who prefer not to have this feature, autoplay can easily be disabled in the settings menu. In addition to autoplay controls, users can enhance their videos with subtitles and apply labels, such as those indicating adult content, making the platform more inclusive and versatile.

Despite this new feature, Bluesky has implemented certain limitations to ensure a balanced experience. Users are restricted to 25 video uploads per day or 10GB of video content, whichever is reached first. These restrictions help maintain the platform’s decentralized nature and prevent potential overloads or misuse.

To keep the platform safe from harmful content, Bluesky has introduced safeguards. Users must verify their email addresses before being allowed to post videos. Repeated violations of community guidelines could result in losing the ability to upload videos. Additionally, the platform has partnered with Hive, an AI-driven content moderation tool, and Thorn, a nonprofit focused on combating child exploitation. These technologies work together to screen videos for illegal material and ensure content remains appropriate.

For users eager to try the new video feature, simply refreshing the desktop site or updating the mobile app to version 1.91 may grant access. However, Bluesky is gradually rolling out this feature, so not all users will see it immediately.

Bluesky’s introduction of video sharing brings it closer to matching the capabilities of X, providing more opportunities for sports fans, meme creators, and news organizations to engage with the platform. This expansion will grow Bluesky’s community and strengthen its position as a dynamic decentralized social media alternative.
