Brave Browser’s latest update for iOS, version 1.71, introduces a groundbreaking privacy feature called “Shred.”
This tool empowers users to delete browsing data for specific websites with ease, addressing the privacy concerns associated with first-party cookies and session tracking.
What Sets Shred Apart?
Unlike traditional options in mobile browsers, which often force users to clear data across all sites, Shred offers a more precise approach. With a single tap, users can delete cookies, local storage (via private WebKit APIs), and network-related caches for a specific site. This ensures users aren’t logged out of every website or burdened with managing complex site exceptions.
How to Use Shred:
- Manually:
Long-press the tabs button and select “Shred Site Data” from the menu, or access it via Shields > Advanced Control. - Automatically:
Enable automatic shredding through Shields > Advanced Control > Shred Site Data, where users can configure it to activate when a site is closed or upon browser restart. For global application, navigate to Settings > Shields & Privacy > Auto Shred.
Limitations and Future Updates
While Shred marks a significant privacy advancement, the Brave team acknowledges that Apple’s restrictions currently limit its ability to completely erase all data. However, the company has assured users that Shred will soon be available for Android and desktop versions, where the “Forgetful Browsing” feature already offers similar benefits.
With this innovative addition, Brave continues to uphold its commitment to user privacy, giving users more control over their browsing experience.
