A new report from cybersecurity firm Lookout has unveiled a sophisticated Android spyware dubbed “EagleMsgSpy,” raising concerns about its potential use by Chinese law enforcement agencies for mobile surveillance.
EagleMsgSpy, designed to operate discreetly on infected devices, possesses extensive surveillance capabilities. These include the ability to record screen activity, capture audio, track location, and intercept messages from popular communication platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.
The report strongly implicates Wuhan Chinasoft Token Information Technology Co., Ltd., a Chinese company, as the likely developer of this invasive software. This conclusion is supported by a confluence of evidence, including overlapping infrastructure, internal documentation, and direct references within the spyware’s code.
Furthermore, the investigation revealed strong ties between the spyware’s command-and-control servers and domains associated with various Chinese public security bureaus, suggesting its potential use by law enforcement agencies.
