Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, is now available to free users on X (formerly Twitter), marking a shift in accessibility for the “humorous AI assistant.”
As of Friday, non-premium subscribers can send up to 10 messages to Grok every two hours.
Launched by Musk’s xAI last year, Grok was initially exclusive to Premium subscribers. In August, xAI introduced a text-to-image generation feature for Grok, though it sparked controversy due to its ability to create inappropriate or controversial content.
This expansion comes after reports last month that xAI began testing a free version of Grok in select regions. By offering a free tier, xAI aims to position Grok more competitively against popular free AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Anthropic’s Claude.
To further enhance its offering, xAI is reportedly considering developing a standalone app for Grok, following the lead of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, which already provide dedicated apps. With $6 billion raised in its latest funding round, xAI is poised to continue evolving Grok’s capabilities and reach.
Making Grok accessible to free users signals Musk’s intent to broaden the AI assistant’s user base and keep pace with the rapidly expanding AI landscape.
