GitHub, the widely-used code repository and developer platform, has successfully resolved a significant disruption that occurred on Wednesday, impacting its website and various services.
The company attributed the problems to recent changes in its database infrastructure, which have since been reverted. As of 8:26 PM ET, GitHub confirmed that all services are “fully operational,” according to their status update. It’s worth noting that Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018.
Initially, users attempting to access the GitHub website were met with an error message stating, “no server is currently available to service your request.” However, the site was back online shortly after, though not before users saw a quirky error page featuring an image of an irate unicorn. The incident also affected other GitHub features, including pull requests, GitHub Pages, Copilot, and the GitHub API.
The situation escalated quickly, with GitHub first acknowledging the issue at 7:11 PM ET. In the minutes that followed, the platform reported additional problems across multiple services. The outage seemed widespread, with Downdetector receiving over 10,000 reports of issues, which spiked suddenly. Additionally, at 7:13 PM ET, the internet monitoring service NetBlocks reported that GitHub was “experiencing international outages.”
