Microsoft has acknowledged a recent issue where Gmail’s spam filters are incorrectly flagging legitimate emails sent from Outlook.com addresses.

“Remote server returned message detected as spam [..]. Gmail has detected that this message is likely suspicious due to the very low reputation of the sending domain. To best protect our users from spam, the message has been blocked,” the replies from Gmail’s mail server (mx.google.com) explain.

Google’s support website says that it’s very likely that only a subset of these messages are being blocked because they have “a strong likelihood of being spam.”

Temporary Solution

While the companies work on a permanent fix, Microsoft suggests a workaround: adding an Outlook.com alias to your account. An alias is an additional email address that uses the same inbox and settings as your primary address.

Here’s how to add an Outlook.com alias:

  1. Go to your Microsoft account settings.
  2. Locate the “Add an alias” option.
  3. Create a new Outlook.com email address or use an existing address from a different provider.

Once you have an alias, try using it when contacting Gmail users to reduce the chances of your messages ending up in the spam folder.
