Gmail is getting more AI features that could make it easier to stay on top of your email.
On the web, Google is beginning to roll out a new Gemini side panel that can summarize email threads and draft new emails. This tool offers “proactive prompts” and allows users to ask “freeform questions,” leveraging Google’s advanced models like Gemini 1.5 Pro. In the Gmail mobile apps, users will also gain the ability to have Gemini summarize threads.
These improvements could be highly useful, particularly for those managing high volumes of email. However, they will only be available to paid Gemini users. To access these features, you need to be a Google Workspace customer with a Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on, a Gemini Education or Education Premium add-on, or a Google One AI Premium subscriber. Despite the convenience these tools offer, it’s advisable to double-check important emails before sending, as AI can sometimes generate inaccuracies.
In addition to Gmail, Google is rolling out Gemini features to the side panel in Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive. This follows Google’s announcements at I/O last month about upcoming AI integrations. More AI features for Gmail are also expected, including “Contextual Smart Reply,” which will further enhance the user experience by providing relevant, on-the-spot suggestions for email responses.
