Google has resolved a bug in Chrome’s Password Manager that caused user credentials to temporarily vanish for over 18 hours.
The problem began on Wednesday and affected users worldwide who depend on Chrome’s built-in tool for storing and autofilling passwords.
In a Google Workspace incident report, it was noted that the issue impacted around 2% of all Windows users who had upgraded to Chrome 127, the latest version of the browser.
On Thursday, Google released a preliminary root cause analysis report, attributing the global outage to a “change in product behavior” and confirmed that a fix had been implemented. The report stated, “Impacted users were unable to find passwords in Chrome’s password manager. Users can save passwords, however it was not visible to them.
The impact was limited to the M127 version of Chrome Browser on the Windows platform.” Google engineers identified that the issue stemmed from a change in product behavior without proper feature guard and mitigated the problem by deploying a fix.
