Google’s Gemini AI is becoming more useful in Google Sheets with new capabilities that allow it to analyze data trends and generate static charts, the company announced in a recent Workspace blog post.

These features are now rolling out to most Workspace plans and users subscribed to the $19.99-per-month Google One AI Premium plan.

Gemini can now answer data-related queries by running Python code in the background and producing insights based on the results. For simpler tasks, it may rely on standard spreadsheet formulas. This enhancement aims to simplify data analysis and visualization, making it easier for users to interpret complex datasets without manual effort. Previously, Gemini’s functionality in Sheets was limited to providing usage tips and generating basic tables.

However, Google notes that these AI-generated charts are static images, meaning they won’t update automatically when data changes. Users must prompt Gemini to regenerate new charts if their data is modified, unlike traditional charts that adjust dynamically. Additionally, Google cautions that factors like inconsistent data formatting, missing values, or vague user prompts can affect Gemini’s accuracy.

The feature is expected to be fully available by February 20th, expanding Gemini’s role within Workspace. This follows Google’s recent AI-driven updates to Workspace Business plans, which included a price increase, regardless of whether users opted for the AI features.
