Google is pulling its AI assistant, Gemini, from the main Google app on iOS, urging users to download its standalone Gemini app instead.
The move is aimed at making Gemini a stronger competitor to AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. However, this decision may reduce Gemini’s accessibility, as many users may not be motivated to download an additional app.
The tech giant notified customers via email, stating that “Gemini is no longer available in the Google app.” Users who wish to continue using Gemini on iOS are directed to download the dedicated Gemini app from the App Store. Although the Gemini app launched for iOS worldwide last year, it had remained accessible within the Google app until now.
With the standalone Gemini app, users can interact with the AI through voice conversations using Gemini Live, connect with Google services like Search, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail, generate AI-powered summaries and images, plan trips, and more. Google also reminds users that Gemini may occasionally make mistakes, urging them to double-check its responses.
For those looking to upgrade, the Gemini app offers a paid subscription to Gemini Advanced via the Google One AI Premium plan. iOS users attempting to access Gemini through the Google app will now see a full-screen message redirecting them to the App Store to download the dedicated app.
