Google has announced that it will begin redirecting all country-specific Google Search domains (like google.in
or google.co.uk
) to google.com over the coming months.
The move is aimed at streamlining the search experience for users around the world, the company said in a blog post on Tuesday.
With this update, if you normally visit a localized Google domain such as google.com.np
(Nepal) or google.ng
(Nigeria), Your browser will now show google.com instead. As this change rolls out gradually, Google says you may need to re-enter some of your search settings.
Google clarified that this change wouldn’t affect how Search works or how it complies with local laws. “It’s important to note that while this update will change what people see in their browser address bar, it won’t affect the way Search works,” the company said.
Since 2017, Google has been delivering local search results regardless of whether users are on a country-specific domain or google.com. Now, with this update, country-level domains are no longer needed to get locally relevant results.
