Instagram is exploring the launch of a separate app for Reels, its short-form video feature, according to a report by The Information.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri reportedly shared the idea with staff this week, signaling Meta’s efforts to capitalize on TikTok’s uncertain status in the U.S. by offering a similar video-scrolling experience.
Meta has not officially commented on the report, but the move would align with the company’s broader push into video content. In January, Meta introduced Edits, a video-editing app that appears to be a competitor to CapCut, TikTok parent ByteDance’s popular editing tool.
This isn’t Meta’s first attempt at launching a TikTok rival. In 2018, the company introduced Lasso, a standalone short-video app, but it failed to gain traction and was later shut down. With TikTok facing potential restrictions in the U.S., Meta may see an opportunity to establish Reels as a dominant short-video platform.
