First responder networks are rallying behind a significant new feature in iOS 18: Live Video support. Platforms like RapidSOS Unite and Prepared are integrating with Apple’s Emergency SOS Live Video, announced at WWDC in June.

This new feature allows users to video chat with 911 dispatchers and emergency responders, enhancing their ability to locate and assist you quickly in emergencies.

Apple’s Emergency SOS previously enabled voice calls, text messages, and location sharing with responders.

This update is part of Apple’s broader effort to enhance safety features. In recent years, Apple has introduced Crash Detection on iPhone 14 and newer models, as well as on Apple Watch Series 8, Ultra, and the second-generation SE. iPhone 14 and 15 users can also access Emergency SOS via satellite, allowing them to send texts and location data to emergency responders even without cell signal.

Additional Emergency SOS features include Fall Detection, available since Apple Watch Series 4, and the ability to make emergency calls by holding specific buttons. With iOS 18, Apple is also introducing iMessage through satellite and has recently added Roadside Assistance via satellite.
