A coalition of 83 Spanish media outlets has filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, seeking €550 million (approximately $600 million) in damages.

The lawsuit, filed with a commercial court in Spain, accuses Meta of engaging in unfair competition in the online advertising market by leveraging its massive user data collection across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The media outlets allege that Meta’s “systematic and extensive” data collection practices allow the company to gain an unfair advantage in ad personalization.

They claim that Meta uses this data to create highly targeted ads that are significantly more effective than those offered by competitors who lack access to the same level of user information. This, they argue, stifles their ability to reach their target audiences and undermines their financial viability.
