Microsoft has resolved a bug that mistakenly removed the AI-powered Copilot digital assistant from some Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems following the March 2025 cumulative updates.
The issue affected users who installed the KB5053598 (Windows 24H2) and KB5053606 (Windows 10 22H2) updates.
Microsoft acknowledged the problem in updated support documents, stating that Copilot was unintentionally uninstalled and unpinned from the taskbar. However, the issue did not affect the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. The company has since fixed the bug, restoring affected devices to their original state. Users who don’t want an automatic fix can manually reinstall the app from the Microsoft Store and re-pin it to the taskbar.
Despite resolving the issue, Microsoft has yet to explain why Copilot was automatically removed and has not listed the problem on its Windows release health dashboard. This is not the first time Copilot has faced deployment issues. In June 2024, Microsoft had to remove a mistakenly installed Copilot app caused by a buggy Microsoft Edge update. Additionally, Copilot was briefly added to Windows Server 2025 preview builds but later removed after backlash from system administrators.
Microsoft continues to expand Copilot’s capabilities, recently rolling out a native app to Windows Insiders via the Microsoft Store. The company also introduced a press-to-talk feature, allowing users to interact with Copilot using their voice by holding the Alt + Spacebar keyboard shortcut.
