Microsoft has resolved a known issue that caused macOS applications to freeze when opening or saving files in OneDrive.

The bug, first acknowledged in November, primarily affected systems running macOS 15 Sequoia, the latest release of Apple’s operating system.

According to Microsoft, the problem occurred when users attempted to open or save files in the Desktop or Documents folders linked to OneDrive. This caused the file’s associated application to become unresponsive.

Fix and Workarounds

Microsoft has addressed the issue for users who have updated to macOS 15.2. For those yet to upgrade, the company recommends a temporary workaround:

  1. Force Quit the Problematic Process:
    • Open Activity Monitor (located in Applications > Utilities or accessible via Spotlight).
    • Search for OpenAndSavePanelService in the top-right search bar.
    • Select the process, click the X button in the top menu, and choose Force Quit.
  2. Change Save Location:
    • Restart OneDrive and save files to a location other than the Desktop, Documents, or OneDrive folders.

If users experience freezes when opening files, they should move the file to a different folder and reopen it.

Microsoft is also looking into a separate issue affecting both Windows and macOS users, where saved files appear to be missing in OneDrive. As a temporary fix, the company advises users to manually locate files using File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS). Re-saving the files may improve their visibility in the OneDrive app or web interface.
