Microsoft has resolved a problem affecting Remote Desktop (RDP) and Remote Desktop Services (RDS) connections that emerged after Windows updates were released in January 2025.

The issue caused RDP sessions to disconnect after 65 seconds when connecting from Windows 11 24H2 to older Windows Server 2016 systems.

While Windows Server 2025 itself wasn’t directly affected as an RDS host, it could still trigger sudden disconnections when acting as an RDP client to older servers. Microsoft acknowledged the issue earlier this week, noting a spike in reports following the March 2025 security update (KB5053598).

The fix is now available in the KB5053656 preview update, released Thursday, and applies to Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025. Microsoft recommends that users install the latest update for improved stability and security. The fix will be included in next month’s cumulative updates, but IT admins can also apply it immediately to enterprise-managed devices using a Known Issue Rollback group policy.
