Microsoft is rolling out a redesigned sign-in screen for over a billion users across services like Outlook, Windows, Xbox, and Microsoft 365.

The new authentication interface adopts Microsoft’s Fluent 2 design language and introduces a dark mode inspired by Xbox colors.

As part of this overhaul, Microsoft has enhanced the sign-in experience with a focus on passwordless authentication. “Our new UX is optimized for a passwordless and passkey-first experience,” said Robin Goldstein, partner director of product management for Microsoft Identity. The streamlined interface reduces cognitive load by simplifying screen elements and reordering steps for a more logical authentication process.

The redesign also includes automatic light and dark theme support, adjusting based on the user’s device settings. Initially, the updated sign-in screen will appear in gaming apps, with broader support for other consumer apps planned for the future. Xbox users are already seeing the new experience across web and mobile, while a full rollout will continue through March and April, starting with web and mobile apps before reaching Windows applications.

This update applies only to personal Microsoft accounts, leaving Microsoft Entra work and school accounts unchanged. However, Microsoft is considering similar improvements for enterprise users based on insights gained from this update.
