Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue support for the Remote Desktop app (available via the Microsoft Store) on May 27, 2025, replacing it with the new Windows App.

After this date, connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box through the old Remote Desktop app will be blocked.

The Windows App is designed for work and school accounts, allowing users to connect to cloud PCs, virtual desktops, and remote machines across Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box. It is available on multiple platforms, including PCs, tablets, smartphones, and web browsers. Microsoft officially launched the app in September 2024, calling it a “unified gateway to Windows.”

However, the Windows App does not yet support Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and Remote PC connections on Windows, although it does on macOS, iOS, Android, Chrome OS, web, and Meta Quest. Because of this, Microsoft recommends using the built-in Remote Desktop Connection app for Remote Desktop Services and Remote PC connections until full support is added to the Windows App.

To connect to a remote device using Remote Desktop Connection, users can search for “Remote Desktop Connection” in the Windows Start Menu, enter the PC name, and click “Connect.”
