Microsoft has alerted customers to potential black screen delays of up to 30 minutes when logging into Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) after installing the KB5040525 Windows 10 July 2024 preview update.

Users may also experience failures in single sign-on (SSO) for Office applications like Outlook and Teams, which can block connections to backend services and disrupt data synchronization.

The issue stems from a deadlock occurring between the Azure Active Directory (AAD) broker and the AppX deployment service (AppxSvc) along with the Background tasks infrastructure service, according to a recent update on Microsoft’s Windows release health page. Microsoft clarified that this problem differs from a previously resolved issue involving an invalid state of the AppX Deployment Service, which caused similar black screen symptoms.

This black screen problem is more prevalent among users employing FSLogix user profile containers, commonly utilized in virtual environments. However, users of Windows 10 Education, Home, or Pro editions are less likely to encounter this issue, as Azure Virtual Desktop is primarily used in enterprise settings.
