Tech billionaire Elon Musk has reignited his dispute with OpenAI, alleging once again that the ChatGPT creator and its founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, have strayed from the organization’s original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity.
This follows a previous lawsuit Musk dropped earlier this year.
Filed in federal court in Northern California on Monday, the new lawsuit claims that Altman and Brockman manipulated Musk into co-founding OpenAI by promising that it would be a safer and more transparent nonprofit alternative to profit-driven AI companies. According to the suit, these assurances were part of “Altman’s long con.”
Previously, Musk had withdrawn a lawsuit in June without explanation, which also accused OpenAI of breaching its founding agreement to keep its technology open source. Musk’s lawyer, Marc Toberoff, told The New York Times, “This is a much more forceful lawsuit.” The new suit accuses OpenAI of violating federal racketeering laws in a conspiracy to defraud Musk and alleges that OpenAI’s contract with Microsoft would invalidate Microsoft’s rights to OpenAI’s technology once artificial general intelligence (AGI) is achieved.
