OpenAI has announced a significant enhancement to the provenance of images generated through ChatGPT on the web and their API featuring the DALL·E 3 model. Moving forward, these images will include C2PA metadata, providing users with valuable insights into their origin and authenticity.
This update will be progressively rolled out to all mobile users by February 12th, ensuring a consistent experience across platforms. Users can now utilize platforms like Content Credentials Verify to verify if an image has been generated using OpenAI’s tools and the DALL·E 3 model.
While the addition of C2PA metadata offers improved transparency, it’s important to note its limitations. Social media platforms often strip metadata from uploaded images, and certain actions like taking screenshots can also remove it. Hence, users should interpret the presence or absence of metadata cautiously when determining the origin of an image.
