OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has shared details about the company’s upcoming AI models, GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, in a post on X.

He also acknowledged that OpenAI’s product lineup has become complex and promised to simplify it. “We hate the model picker as much as you do and want to return to magic unified intelligence,” Altman said.

GPT-4.5, internally known as Orion, will be OpenAI’s last model without chain-of-thought reasoning. After that, the company’s focus will be on merging its o-series and GPT-series models into a single system that can handle a wide range of tasks efficiently.

For ChatGPT and OpenAI’s API users, GPT-5 will be a major upgrade, incorporating technology from the o3 model. Unlike previous plans, OpenAI will no longer release o3 as a separate model. When GPT-5 launches, free users will get unlimited chat at the standard intelligence level, while Plus and Pro subscribers will access higher intelligence levels.

Altman didn’t specify an exact release date for GPT-4.5 or GPT-5, only mentioning a timeframe of “weeks or months.” Meanwhile, Elon Musk recently offered $97.4 billion to buy OpenAI’s nonprofit arm, but the company’s board is expected to reject the bid.
