OpenAI has officially launched a new, premium subscription plan for its ChatGPT platform: ChatGPT Pro. At a steep price of $200 per month, this plan is designed for heavy users who rely on ChatGPT for demanding tasks like programming, mathematics, and content creation.
The new subscription grants unlimited access to OpenAI’s latest models, including the full version of o1, a sophisticated AI “reasoning” model. Unlike traditional AI models, o1 can verify its own responses while completing tasks, helping it avoid mistakes that typically challenge AI systems. However, this self-checking process means o1 may take more time to arrive at answers.
O1, which debuted as a preview in September, has seen substantial improvements in its full version. OpenAI promises a faster, more powerful, and accurate model, especially in coding and math. One of the standout features of this update is that o1 can now analyze images, a capability that was absent in the initial preview. OpenAI claims o1 reduces major errors by 34% on difficult real-world queries.
For ChatGPT Pro subscribers, the o1 model has an exclusive “Pro Mode,” offering even more powerful and precise answers by utilizing additional computational resources. Though responses may take longer, users will be notified of progress and delays. According to OpenAI, this enhanced version of o1 delivers more accurate and comprehensive responses, particularly in data science, programming, and legal analysis.
One key perk for Pro users is access to GPT-4o and the new Advanced Voice Mode, which provides more natural and conversational AI interactions. OpenAI also plans to expand o1’s capabilities, with future updates including web browsing, file uploads, and more.
While the $200 price tag may deter some, OpenAI is offering a limited number of free subscriptions. Ten ChatGPT Pro grants will be given to medical researchers, with more plans for additional grants in the future.
These pricing moves come as OpenAI faces pressure from investors to reduce its significant losses, despite generating over $300 million in monthly revenue. The company’s expenses, particularly for AI training and infrastructure, have led to projected losses of $5 billion this year. With ChatGPT being one of OpenAI’s major revenue streams, the new Pro plan is a bold attempt to cater to the platform’s most dedicated users, even as it pushes the boundaries of AI capabilities.
