The official OpenAI Newsroom account on X, which shares news and updates from the company and has nearly 54,000 followers, was taken over to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme.
Yesterday at 6:24 PM ET, the account posted a now-deleted tweet announcing a fake “$OPENAI” token, claiming it would bridge AI and blockchain technology.
The post falsely stated that OpenAI users were eligible to claim the token and that holding it would grant access to future beta programs. The tweet also contained a link to a spoofed version of OpenAI’s website, which was not affiliated with the company.
Upon visiting the site, users were prompted to connect their cryptocurrency wallets to claim the fake tokens—a clear scam attempt.
