According to NPR, Oracle, along with an investor group that includes Microsoft, is reportedly discussing acquiring TikTok’s global operations.
The deal, which is said to involve the White House, would allow ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to retain a minority stake. Meanwhile, Oracle would oversee key aspects of the platform, including its algorithm, data collection, and software updates.
Under the proposed agreement, Oracle, which already provides much of TikTok’s server infrastructure, would take on a pivotal role in monitoring the app’s operations. According to NPR’s sources, the arrangement aims to “reduce Chinese ownership” while ensuring oversight and security.
Microsoft’s role in the talks remains unclear. However, this is not the company’s first involvement in TikTok-related negotiations. In 2020, Microsoft joined Oracle and Walmart in a bid to acquire the app. At the time, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates described the deal as a “poisoned chalice.” Walmart has reportedly stepped back from current talks due to concerns over the app’s valuation.
