Reddit is launching a new program that will allow users to convert their Reddit Gold awards into real money.

The program, called the “Contributor Program,” is designed to reward users for their contributions to the platform, such as creating and sharing high-quality content, moderating subreddits, and participating in discussions.

Today, we’re simplifying the experience of awarding content that redditors like with a new gold system. To purchase and award with gold (or “gild”), redditors can long press the upvote icon on mobile (or hover over it on desktop) directly within the post or comment they want to reward.

Reddit will offer six different purchase options for awarding gold, starting at a $1.99 option to buy one gold and going up to $49 for 25 gold. After you give your gold, you’ll see what Reddit calls a “golden upvote” next to the comment or post.

Gold will begin rolling out on Monday and initially be available on eligible content on Reddit native mobile apps, in select communities, and will expand to additional communities in the coming weeks. Rollout for gold will be available on the web later this year.

Reddit is also introducing a new Contributor Program where qualifying Redditors, including mods, can be rewarded with real (fiat) money for the content they share and contributions they make to Reddit.

How it works:

  • To participate in the Contributor Program, redditors must meet certain eligibility requirements and go through a verification process. Eligibility requirements include being 18+ years old, residing in a supported location (United States to start), and having an account in good standing, along with other factors.
  • Redditors who participate in the program can then earn real money for their eligible contributions.
  • Once enrolled in the program, Redditors will receive payments on a monthly basis. The earnings a Redditor receives are calculated based on the amount of karma earned and gold received on their eligible contributions.

The new Contributor Program will begin rolling out today in the US across all Reddit surfaces (both web and native apps). Logged-in Redditors can navigate to the program via their profile menu, and after clicking, the program page will appear. If a Redditor is eligible, the Get Verified to Start Earning button will be tappable.
