Reddit is rolling out a new policy that will issue warnings to users who repeatedly upvote content that violates platform rules.

Initially focusing on violent content, the change aims to curb engagement with harmful material, the company announced on Wednesday.

A Reddit employee reassured users that this update will have little to no effect on most people, as “the vast majority” already downvote or report rule-breaking posts. In response to concerns that the policy might discourage people from voting altogether, the employee emphasized that Reddit will monitor the rollout carefully to prevent any unintended consequences.

The platform has previously used a similar approach for quarantined communities, where limiting engagement helped reduce exposure to problematic content. Based on that success, Reddit is now expanding the experiment sitewide. The company also hinted that it may extend the policy in the future to address other forms of rule-breaking behavior beyond violent content.
