Tencent has begun testing DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence model within its Weixin messaging app.

The tech giant confirmed on Sunday that Weixin, the country’s largest messaging platform, is allowing select users to conduct searches using DeepSeek’s AI capabilities.

This beta test signals Tencent’s openness to external AI integrations, a notable move as major tech firms race to develop the most advanced AI models. In an email statement to Reuters, Tencent explained that Weixin is experimenting with DeepSeek to enhance search functionality.

While Weixin already leverages Tencent’s in-house Hunyuan-Large Language Model to power AI-driven searches, the company is now exploring additional integrations with DeepSeek. A source familiar with the matter revealed that Tencent is also considering incorporating DeepSeek into other products, including its Cloud AI Code Assistant and the AI-powered assistant app Tencent Yuanbao.
