TikTok has announced plans to block the use of certain filters for users under 18, particularly those that alter a person’s appearance.

This move comes after growing concerns that beauty filters, rather than harmless effects like bunny ears, can have a detrimental impact on young users’ self-esteem and body image.

Owned by the $300 billion tech giant ByteDance, TikTok’s terms of service allow users aged 13 and up to create an account. However, users between the ages of 13 and 18 have different privacy settings and features. Despite TikTok’s efforts to enforce these age restrictions, regulators have raised questions about their effectiveness.

TikTok says these changes will be rolled out globally over the next few weeks.
