The Trump administration is reportedly weighing new restrictions on Chinese AI company DeepSeek, aiming to curb its access to Nvidia’s AI chips and potentially block U.S. users from accessing its services, according to The New York Times.
This move is part of broader efforts to counter China’s growing AI influence, especially after DeepSeek gained significant traction among American developers with its affordable AI models. U.S. officials are said to be exploring multiple strategies to limit China’s access to American technology and consumer markets.
The news follows the White House’s recent tightening of rules restricting Nvidia’s AI chip exports to China, strengthening export controls originally introduced by the Biden administration.
DeepSeek’s rapid rise has also raised intellectual property concerns, with OpenAI accusing the company of model distillation in violation of its terms of use, fueling further scrutiny from U.S. regulators.
