US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on semiconductor chips, with the possibility of even higher rates in the future.
This comes alongside his proposed 25% tariff on automobiles.
During a recent press interaction, when asked about potential tariffs on pharmaceuticals and chips, Trump responded:
“It’ll be 25% and higher, and it’ll go very substantially higher over the course of a year, but we want to give them time to come in. When they set up their factories in the U.S., there will be no tariff, so we want to give them a chance.”
Previously, Trump had suggested imposing a 100% tariff on chips from Taiwan, so this announcement could indicate a shift in his stance. If implemented, the new tariffs could take effect as early as April 2. Additionally, computers assembled in China will become more expensive due to his planned 10% tariffs on Chinese imports.
