Western Sydney University (WSU) has announced a data breach that has exposed sensitive student information.
The breach, initially detected in January 2024, has been linked to unauthorized access to the university’s Microsoft Office 365 environment dating back to May 2023.
The investigation revealed that hackers accessed WSU’s Microsoft Office 365 environment, including email accounts and SharePoint files. This means that a wide range of student data, such as personal information, academic records, and communications, may have been compromised.
“The investigation has indicated that the earliest known unauthorized access to the University’s Microsoft Office 365 environment was on 17 May 2023 and included access to some email accounts and SharePoint files,” reads the WSU announcement.
“Investigations also indicate that the University’s Solar Car Laboratory infrastructure may have been used as part of the incident.”
WSU has assured that they are taking steps to notify affected individuals and provide them with support and resources.
