WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that lets users add music clips to their status updates, bringing back a bit of old-school internet nostalgia.

The feature is rolling out worldwide and will expand over the coming weeks, according to Meta.

Similar to Stories on Facebook and Instagram, WhatsApp’s status feature allows users to share text, photos, and videos that disappear after 24 hours. Now, a music note icon will appear when adding a status, letting users add up to 15 seconds of a song for photos and 60 seconds for videos.

WhatsApp says its music library contains millions of songs, and users can pick the exact part they want to feature—perfect for highlighting lyrics or following viral trends. This update follows similar features on Instagram and brings back memories of old platforms like AIM and MySpace, where users could express themselves through music.

Like WhatsApp messages, status updates remain end-to-end encrypted, meaning WhatsApp itself won’t see or track the songs you choose—but your friends definitely will.
