WhatsApp announced today that it is introducing Channels, a new way for users to stay connected with businesses, organizations, and other users.

Channels are one-way broadcast channels that allow admins to send text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls to a large audience.

Channels are a private way to follow what matters to you. They are separate from your chats with friends, family, and communities, and your personal information is protected. Channel history is only stored on WhatsApp’s servers for up to 30 days, and admins can block screenshots and forwards.

WhatsApp is rolling out Channels in Colombia and Singapore first and will expand to more countries in the coming months. Anyone will be able to create a channel, and WhatsApp is exploring the possibility of end-to-end encryption for channels in the future.

“We’re excited to introduce Channels, a new way for people to stay connected with the things they care about,” said Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp. “Channels are a private and reliable way to get important updates from businesses, organizations, and other users, and we’re excited to see how people use them.”

Here are some of the ways that Channels can be used:

  • Businesses can use Channels to send updates to their customers, such as new products, sales, and promotions.
  • Organizations can use Channels to communicate with their members, such as students, employees, and volunteers.
  • Users can use Channels to follow their favorite celebrities, influencers, and brands.
