According to a new report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp‘s web-based client may soon get built-in voice and video call functionality.
Right now, users need to use the mobile app or the desktop app on a PC or a Mac to make calls. But that could soon change.
WABetaInfo recently spotted new call buttons — a phone icon for voice calls and a camera icon for video calls — appearing on the web version of WhatsApp. This suggests that soon, users will be able to make calls directly from their web browsers without relying on a separate app.
Last month, WhatsApp updated the way users start voice and video calls in chats by introducing a new call dropdown menu for beta testers. Now, it looks like the company is expanding its work on making calling more widely available.
A shared screenshot shows a WhatsApp group chat open in a web browser, with the familiar call buttons — something that previously wasn’t available on the web client.
Once officially rolled out, this update will make WhatsApp Web more versatile, similar to platforms like Microsoft Teams, which allow users to chat and meet directly through web browsers like Chrome, Edge, or Safari without downloading additional apps.
