WordPress.com has introduced a new AI-powered site builder that can create an entire website for you — including layout, images, and text — in just a few minutes.
This new feature is currently in early access and is designed to help users build good-looking, functional websites quickly and easily.
To use the WordPress AI Site Builder, you’ll need to sign up for a WordPress.com account. The tool is free to try, and you don’t need to enter your credit card to test it out. However, to publish and use the website, you’ll need a hosting plan, which starts at $18 per month (or less if you pay yearly).
The site builder works through a chatbot interface. You just tell it what kind of site you want — personal, portfolio, or business — and describe things like your preferred color scheme or the style of the header. The more details you give, the better the results. The AI can also ask for information such as your business name and location to personalize your site.
Once the details are in, the builder creates a website using AI-generated text, headers, and images. You can even ask the AI to make changes after it’s done — like tweaking colors, swapping photos, or editing text. For example, one test user built a retro video game store site. The builder generated pages like “Discover,” “Events,” and “Visit Us,” with matching images and even made-up event descriptions.
Right now, this tool only works for brand-new sites, not ones you’ve already built. And while it’s great for basic websites, it can’t yet handle more complex projects like online stores or advanced features — though WordPress.com says those options are coming soon.
This launch comes just after Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, laid off 16% of its staff. It also faces a lawsuit from WP Engine, another major hosting company that provides its website-building tools.
