Ireland’s Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) has ruled in favor of Gary Rooney, a former executive at Twitter, now rebranded as X, ordering the company to pay him €550,000 (~$600,000) for unfair dismissal.
The case stems from Rooney’s termination in 2022 after he failed to respond to an email asking employees to accept Elon Musk’s “extremely hardcore” work culture or leave.
Rooney chose not to click “yes” on the email, a decision the WRC determined did not amount to a resignation.
According to a report by RTE, the WRC found that Rooney’s lack of response to the email was “not capable of constituting an act of resignation.” This decision reinforces the importance of clear communication and formal procedures in employment terminations.
