X (formerly Twitter) is significantly changing how creators can earn money from the platform. Previously, creators were paid based on the number of verified users who saw ads in replies to their posts.

However, X announced today that creators will earn based on “engagement with your content from Premium users.”

In simpler terms, the more Premium users (subscribers to X Premium) engage with a creator’s content, the more money that creator can potentially make. This new model seems to reward interactions between Premium subscribers, making it essential for creators to attract this audience.

But there’s a catch. X Premium users already get priority placement in tweet replies, and this new model might lead to even more Premium users dominating the conversation. This could drive non-Premium users further down the reply chain, limiting their visibility.

It’s unclear whether this new approach will lead to higher earnings for creators. Many Premium subscribers have already voiced frustration over low payouts under the current system. While X claims that signing up for Premium can help creators “earn a living on X,” results have yet to align with this promise.

To prevent abuse of the system, X has warned creators that any attempt to artificially inflate engagement from Premium users will result in removal from the revenue program. Only genuine interactions will count toward earnings. Starting November 8th, revenue from “verified ad impressions” in replies will no longer impact payouts, and X has pledged that up to 25 percent of Premium subscription revenue will go directly to creators.
