X has introduced a new AI image generator model called Aurora, which is designed to produce more photorealistic images than its predecessor, Grok.

According to TechCrunch, Aurora has minimal restrictions, much like the original Grok model, and is accessible to everyone—albeit with a catch. It can be found under the “Grok 2 + Aurora beta” option in the model selector, but users are limited to a few free queries before hitting the X Premium subscription paywall.

Chris Park, an X employee, announced Aurora’s release earlier today. TechCrunch tested the model and found it capable of generating imagery featuring copyrighted characters and public figures, such as Mickey Mouse and a “bloodied Donald Trump.” However, the model refrains from creating explicit content, such as nudes, consistent with the company’s approach to its earlier AI tools.

One example shared by an X user showcased AI-generated images of celebrities Ray Romano and Adam Sandler. While the images were impressively realistic, they also displayed some peculiar flaws, especially with anatomy and continuity—issues commonly seen in AI-generated art.

Aurora’s introduction highlights X’s push toward providing cutting-edge AI tools, but its lenient content restrictions could stir controversy as users explore its capabilities.
