Xiaomi’s MIUI, the custom Android skin that is pre-installed on many Xiaomi smartphones, is now flagging the popular messaging platform Telegram as a dangerous app in China.
According to reports, when MIUI identifies Telegram, it displays a warning stating, “The app has not passed Xiaomi’s security review. This app is fraudulent, and using it may lead to risks like fraudulent deductions or unwarranted consumption. For security reasons, it is advised to activate security measures to ensure application safety and guard against risky apps.”
The reason for MIUI flagging Telegram as dangerous is unclear. However, it is possible that Xiaomi is complying with Chinese government regulations that restrict the use of certain messaging apps. Telegram is not currently blocked in China, but it is possible that the government could take steps to block it in the future.
Users of Xiaomi smartphones in China who want to use Telegram will need to disable MIUI’s security features in order to install and use the app. However, this is not recommended, as it could leave their devices vulnerable to malware and other attacks.
It is important to note that Telegram is not a dangerous app. It is a secure and popular messaging platform that is used by millions of people around the world. The decision by Xiaomi to flag Telegram as dangerous is likely due to political reasons rather than security concerns.
