YouTube is introducing a new global feature this week that allows parents and guardians to link their accounts with their teenage children’s YouTube accounts.
This new supervision tool aims to help parents stay informed about their teens’ activities on the platform and foster safer content creation practices. Google had hinted at this feature’s release last month.
Through YouTube’s Family Center, parents will be able to monitor key insights such as their child’s subscriptions, comments, and the number of videos they’ve uploaded. Both parents and teens will receive email alerts to notify them of significant activities like new video uploads or when a livestream starts.
YouTube refers to this rollout as the “first iteration” of the feature, which expands upon existing supervision tools for younger users. The company also noted that more functionalities may be added in the future to give parents even deeper insights into their teenagers’ activities. Notably, YouTube emphasized the concept of “mutual control,” allowing either the teen or the parent to disable supervision whenever they choose.
