YouTube is experimenting with a change that may stop some users from receiving push notifications for channels they’ve subscribed to.

The test, announced by TeamYouTube, affects users who have notifications set to “all” but don’t often open them.

The experiment targets frequently uploading channels and won’t impact those that post infrequently. If a user hasn’t engaged with a channel’s recent notifications, YouTube may stop sending push alerts, though notifications will still appear in the YouTube app’s inbox. However, actively engaged viewers will continue receiving push notifications as usual.

YouTube says the goal is to reduce excessive notifications while ensuring creators can still reach their most engaged viewers. However, it’s unclear whether users will be notified that they’re missing alerts or if they can manually override this setting.

For now, YouTube is calling this a small experiment, but there’s no word on how long it will last or if it will expand to more users.
